We know how tricky it can be to pick a great place to eat out when you arrive in a city for the first time, or even if you have been a couple of times already and can’t remember all the good places to grab a bite to eat. We decided to ask all our staff for their top picks for places to eat out in the city to help you to find somewhere to suit your mood – we had lots of ideas and suggestions that came back and below we have compiled a list of the top 5 most popular places to eat out in Wellington – let us know what you think and whether you’ve got any better suggestions.
1. Little Penang (Dixon Street)
At Little Penang on Dixon Street you will find some tremendous authentic Malaysian food which has been inspired by the street food of Penang. This is a great place to grab a quick bit to eat at lunch or if you are in the mood for something lighter at dinner. Top dish recommendation: Assam Laksa. This superb dish is only served at Little Penang on a Thursday and is a fish-based broth that is sweet, hot and sour in equal measures and packs a real punch.

4. The Grand (Courtenay Place)
The Grand building in Wellington was originally built in 1910 and has recently been refurbished with its matai and jarrah floors restored to their former states. This was another popular pick amongst staffers at the Willis Wellington and as soon as you walk in you get a sense of the grandeur of the place. The food is also fantastic with a wide range of dishes including their speciality steaks which can be cooked on a stone grill as well as other delicious dishes including fish and vegetarian.

5. Chow (Tory Street)
The final entry in our top five is Chow – a modern and casual restaurant that offers up a range pf fresh, healthy food that caters for all types of dietary requirements. They proudly use only free range chicken, pork and eggs as well as sustainably caught fish. The menu has a distinctly Asian fell with an English twist and they have a number of special menus including a $25 dollar lunch special and a $40 set menu for dinner.
